2012-2014
Strategic Plan
In 2011 the NWONE Board of Directors held two retreats and invited
nurse leaders from across our membership to join them in dialogue.
The idea of hosting invitational retreats grew out of member
requests for an opportunity to be more involved without becoming an
organizational board member. On November 10, 2011, the NWONE Board
of Directors and guests gathered together in retreat at Seattle's
Hotel 1000. The day began with a presentation from Carolyn Corvi,
recently retired Vice President and General Manager of Airplane
Programs at Boeing and the current chair of the Virginia Mason
Board of Trustees. Carolyn spoke about what it means to be a
transformational leader and illustrated this through her experience
at Boeing. Following Carolyn's talk was a presentation from Barbara
Trehearne, Executive Director, Nursing and Quality for Group Health
Cooperative, and Barbara Hyland-Hill, Director of Nursing
Operations at Group Health Cooperative. They addressed nursing
leadership in a reformed health care environment emphasizing the
movement from hospital centricity to ambulatory care, home care,
and self care settings. After these presentations, the attendees
broke into small groups to discuss how NWONE can build
transformational leaders within its membership and how NWONE can
strategically position itself for the changing health care
environment in order to better serve our members. After small
groups engaged in discussion they shared their ideas with the full
group. Demonstrating the true power of the collective, the groups
came up with a host of insightful recommendations for the NWONE
Board of Directors. These recommendations have been used to shape
the NWONE
2012-2014 strategic plan.
Thank you to all who attended the
retreats! We appreciate your generosity of time and commitment to
NWONE. If you are interested in attending a NWONE invitational
retreat in the future, please contact Erika Wilczek at erikaw@wsha.org.

Upcoming
Events
Emerging Nurse
Leader Series
Recently, we received several
requests from NWONE members to develop education specifically for
emerging nurse leaders. From these suggestions, we have created an
Emerging
Nurse Leader Clinical Summit Series. This eight-part series is
modeled after the American Organization of Nurse Executives
Essentials for Nursing Leadership. The topics are targeted to
enhance the knowledge and growth of emerging nurse leaders. The
topics that will be covered in sequence include:
- Self-Leadership: Discovering the Leader Within
presented by Alison Zecha
- Team Leadership and Project Management
presented by Catherine Broom
- Human Resource Management and Labor Relations
presented by Jennifer Graves
- Quality Management: Moving from "Good Enough" to
Excellent presented by Joanie Ching
- Financial Management, Staffing, Scheduling and
Budgeting presented by Barbara Hyland-Hill and Cathe
Clapp
- Regulatory Legislative Compliance presented by
Gladys Campbell & State Nursing Commission Leaders
- Clinical Ethics and the Creation of Just
Culture presented by Kate Payne
- Creating a Professional Practice Environment
presented by Cathy Whitaker
Individuals may enroll for the
selected workshops of their choice, or may enroll in the full
educational series at a reduced rate. We believe the greatest
benefit is for individuals to attend the full series and to couple
this education with local level mentorship for maximal benefit. The
additional value of attendance in the full series is realized from
the relationships and professional networking that will naturally
develop within a cohort of consistent attendees. If you are an
experienced nurse leader, we ask that you encourage your emerging
nurse leaders to attend. For registration information and
additional details please visit the NWONE website www.nwone.org.

Nursing Salons
Interest in nursing salons has increased among NWONE members.
Not familiar with nursing salons? Marie Manthey is the woman behind
the idea. The goal for the evening is to engage in thoughtful
conversation about the profession of nursing. Salons start by
having each participant "check-in" by responding to the following
question: "What is on your mind about nursing tonight?" Once
everyone has responded, the group enters into in-depth conversation
on any topics of interest. At the end of the evening, each
participant "checks-out" by responding to the following question:
"What is on your mind about nursing now?" These simple questions
provide thought provoking and energizing conversation about
nursing. Marie encourages salon hosts to invite a diverse group of
people to participate. She says "It is the diversity of experience,
education and interest that makes these salons among the richest
conversation any of us have ever experienced." If you are
interested in hosting a nursing salon in your area, please contact
Erika Wilczek at erikaw@wsha.org or (206) 577-1825
and she can send out an invite to NWONE members in your area. If
you are interested in hosting a salon, but not sure how to start
please contact Erika Wilczek and she will put you in contact with
someone who can help! For more information about nursing salons
please visit
Marie Manthey's blog.

Oregon and
Washington News
In 2011 the Institute of Medicine
(IOM) released the "Future of Nursing" Report. Work groups to
address the report's recommendation have formed in Oregon and
Washington. The Oregon Nursing Leadership Collaborative (ONLC) and
the Washington Center for Nursing (WCN) are leading this work in
their respective states.
Oregon IOM
Update
After a year of planning, the ONLC
in November launched two work groups that will focus on preparing
nurse leaders to lead change and increasing the number of
baccalaureate-educated nurses. Each work group is currently working
to form action plans. The ONLC is made up of representatives from
the Oregon Council of Deas, Oregon Council of Associate Degree
Programs, Oregon Nurses Association, Oregon State Board of Nursing,
the Oregon Center for Nursing and NWONE.
Washington IOM
Update
The Washington Nursing Action
Coalition is co-lead by Linda Tieman, Executive Director of the
Washington Center for Nursing and Greg Vigdor, CEO of the
Washington Health Foundation. In October the coalition hosted a
statewide conference, which brought together about 100 stakeholders
to discuss the IOM recommendations. During this conference four
work groups were formed to focus on leadership, education, practice
and collaboration. The coalition is stressing the importance of
partnering with organizations and individuals outside of nursing.
Each workgroup is in the process of forming a charter and standing
meetings.
